“You’re not a girl, you’re a woman.”

November 1, 2018.

“I got that sunshine in my pocket…got that good soul in my feet…”

Dismissed my alarm. Pulled my blanket over and decided to snooze a little. NOPE!

Within half a minute, I sat up from my bed, grabbed my hair band and rushed to the bathroom.

My daily routine started here. Everything seemed usual but not entirely. Instead of driving to my university, I took the public Light Rail Transit (LRT) to somewhere else instead.

Being a blissful kid who normally drives my mum’s car as means of transportation, I wasn’t quite used to the human traffic congestion at the LRT platform. I meant I do take LRT but never did I need to nudge and fight for a standing sardine slot in the LRT during the morning peak hour without worrying of being late for occasion. Oh, imagining I would need to take LRT for the following days, immediately, I thought of my parents and was so grateful towards what my parents had provided us. The train’s finally here and fortunately I managed to squeeze myself into the train despite the crowd of passengers. Two stations away and I arrived at Sunway Velocity Mall, not for shopping but for a more distinct purpose.

Yep, it’s my first day of internship. Reported myself at Sunway Velocity Mall management office half an hour before its operating hour, I was then directed to the Human Resources Department. After settling my job entry procedure, the Human Resource Manager brought me to my seat and briefed me on the company emailing system use. Then, I was left to explore the operating system on my own.

With new technologies ushering in an era of unprecedented productivity, workplace environment is, on the other hand, one of the utmost elements that impact one’s working performance and productivity. While observing the interaction among my colleagues, I realised the open office layout themed with vibrant colours here does induce open communication, positive collaboration, idea-sharing and cultivation of creativity. Each department is segregated and I was seated at the Marketing Department.

Throughout the two-month internship in Sunway Velocity Mall Sdn Bhd, I am really contented and satisfied with the fruitful experience I gained and the relationship we built. With the cheerful working atmosphere, a fast moving pace culture did not cause me struggling but allowed me to embrace the challenges ahead of me. My colleagues are kind and friendly. Working under different colleagues offered me the chance to explore different aspects of tasks such as event organising, promotional visual organising, Level 5 Commune programme planning, sponsorship dealing, market researching and so forth.

This mall marketing management is undoubtedly a fast developing one as every event is planned and progressed since two or three months ahead of time. Came in during the right period as festive season means more event. I was able to observe the event organising stages from the bottommost to the top with my very own eyes and involve in it.

On top of that, the hands-on experience working in a mall management was also eye opening to me. Sunway Velocity Mall is where I spend my leisure time with my family almost every weekends. It is astonishing to see how an event idea grows and develops from zero. Besides, the ins and outs of managing the tenants are observed. As a conclusion, communication is always the key to solution, especially in a large corporate group that involved a great number of employees.

“You’re a not a girl, you’re a woman,” said the eight-year-old Jayden to my twenties colleague.

The line wasn’t directed to me. However, it did stun me.

Like it or not, life has been continuously scheduling us from childhood to adulthood and then elderhood. Quoted from Robin, “Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely.” Use your time wisely, experience every moment to the fullest.
