Something about me

This is my second year studying away from home in West Malaysia.
In a blink of eyes, two years have passed. I am Kathie, currently doing my first year degree in Bachelor of Optometry at UCSI University. Why did I choose optometry and why did I go to UCSI University? Back then, I am a lost kid who still wonder about my future path. I happened to hear about UCSI University’s Bachelor of Optometry programme from my classmates one day after my Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). Upon hearing it, it triggered my interest and passion to choose it as a temporary goal. Coming all the way from Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur was tiring and costly. The flight ticket price seldom went lower than RM 100 especially when I needed a trip. In the first few months of foundation, I was suffering from homesickness. I was quite upset for staying alone in hostel while most of my friends went home on weekend. Luckily, I could see my family members faces via video call which somehow eased my stress. My roommate’s company also somehow comforted me a lot.

Back to the question on why I chose to study optometry, I had been wanted to pick a field that I am more familiar with. I was diagnosed of around +8.00 D axial hypermetropia by the age of two and a half. Luckily my nanny found something wrong on me and had my dad brought me to an ophthalmologist or else it may permanently impaired my eye development and vision. I have been meeting ophthalmologist and optician annually since then. I guess now you know what I mean by “familiar”. Optometrist is between optician and ophthalmologist in rank. Now, I guess I like this profession. It is quite interesting to conduct eye checking and using the instrument. I may be aiming to set up my own practice in long term.

Here at UCSI, I am satisfied with the facilities available in the campus; the computer lab, library, discussion rooms, study area, cafes, photocopy shops and even Family Mart. I often photocopy my lecture notes and assignment at the photocopy shop since I can’t afford for a printer. Studying in the library really helped me to concentrate well. We always have a group discussion about presentations and assignments in the discussion room. Sometimes, we even conducted a study group session in the discussion room. The information resources in the library are the perfect reference for our assignments, revisions and tutorials.

I am a nerd and definitely a bookworm. I love reading (reading material depends on mood, usually online) and random drawing (draw and paint whatever that comes to my mind). This year, I picked up baking cookies and cakes during my semester break and will likely try on new recipes. I also watch my favourite TV series such as Two Broke Girls and Young Sheldon. I love them and sometimes it refreshes my mind with them while studying. Max and Sheldon always cracks me into laughter and sometimes teach me something I will never find on textbooks. I watch movies from many countries. Currently, my favourite movies were Bad Genius and How to Train Your Dragon series for animation movie.
