Love is a mystery that perplexes even the greatest of minds. As it is a feeling that no other creature possesses. Only humans feel this emotion. Now the question that is on everybody’s minds, why do we feel this emotion? Is it just a mixture of chemicals in the brain that causes this, or is there a deeper, more spiritual meaning to this mystery? Love is caused by high levels of dopamine and norepinephrine mix in our brain. It makes us feel giddy, energetic, and euphoric. Sometimes, these chemicals even make us lose appetite or give us insomnia. Thus why sometimes when you’re in love you can’t sleep. Now, ask yourself; Why do you feel this emotion? There’s one obvious example of love that comes about every human’s life, which is the feeling of love between parents and child. The capability of love crosses every boundary of logic. Think about it, how can your parents love you the first second you are born? They have only just met you, am I right? How is it logical to love someone you just met? Yet, their love for their baby transcends all meaning. They would even give their life just to make sure their baby is delivered safely. One could argue that the same could be said for animals and their babies. Well, to me, that all comes down to animal instinct. Not love. In a few weeks, you could easily remove their baby, and they wouldn’t even bat an eye. Just saying. It’s completely different for humans. The feeling lasts forever, even as your children get older, you’re bound to feel some sort of attachment to them, mostly emotionally, or for mothers, a little more physically.

Okay, let me ask you a question. What do you love? Ice cream on a hot day? Warm soup on a cold one? Maybe it’s your favorite football team, or a t-shirt you love wearing. Love comes in all forms, all shapes, and sizes. It comes naturally. You can’t choose who you love or what you love. Take, for example, a boy or a girl you liked or loved. This emotion that comes only able to appear with a connection. Connections are made everywhere you go. Even at a restaurant, when you are ordering your food, you are making a connection with the waiter or waitress that’s taking your order. The type of connection that is formed depends on how the person you’re communicating with can vibe with you. Literally, that’s all it is, isn’t it? How much a person can vibe with you. No, I am not talking about vibrations, the thing that you feel on your PlayStation controller when you die in a game. No, the vibe I am talking about is a feeling that comes from being comfortable or liking something.

Okay, I strayed away from the topic a little bit. But let us get back on track. Say you liked someone. It may be a crush, but why do you think it started? Was it love at first sight? I would say that is puppy love, or did it occur because of a connection you made with someone that somehow just bloomed into something more? Making you want to be more than friends? A connection is a core that makes us who we are and what separates us from other creatures. A connection is a bridge that makes love possible. Do you not believe me? Do you not love your friends? Those people that you text almost every day. Maybe you don’t realize it, but it is love that always bringing you back to them. Wouldn’t you do anything in your power to make sure they’re happy? Yes. You guessed it. That’s love my friends. Different people show their love in different ways. Trust me, I know. I once had a friend who was so nice to other people but was really mean to his close friends. I asked him for the reason once, he said that being mean is his way of showing affection to his close friend. Showing them who he really is and showing them that he knows that they won’t judge him. That reminds me, I should really text him today.

Do you remember that feeling, when you see your crush? Your heart beating so fast that you feel like you just ran seven kilometers, that breathing becomes a laborious task? Your hands won’t stop sweating and your shirt look like you just got drenched in heavy rain? That, my friends, is love. I am sure you know what I’m talking about. Love comes at you like a freight train. You won’t know what hit you until it’s too late. All those songs about love like Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” or Meat Loaf’s “I Will Do Anything For Love” all prove the same point. That love is not an emotion that is easy to get rid of. I feel like I am just telling you what you already know. Everyone feels love at least once in their life toward a special someone. Maybe it blossomed into a relationship, maybe it did not work out. But that’s just life. You win some, you lose some. There even exists a saying about love, “it’s better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all”. What this saying means is that the euphoria of knowing that someone loved you as much as you loved them makes you feel more alive and human than never to have loved someone, or be loved by someone at all. Love is the most human emotion of all, and everyone goes through it. It is how you were born into this world. Your parents “made love” didn’t they? Okay, don’t think about that kind of thing that is disgusting to imagine. Anyway, see what I mean? Why would you feel one way about a certain someone, but another way towards the other? Why would you choose to spend your life with one certain person? It’s love. It transcends space and time.

Quote from the movie Interstellar

Have you lost anyone close to you? Maybe a parent, grandparent, uncle, or auntie? You still love them, don’t you? Even when they are not here. That’s what it meant by love transcends space and time. You are able to love someone no matter how far away they are from you. Even if they have crossed over to other planes of existence. In the movie interstellar, they explain this perfectly. I don’t know if you realized, but the main theme of that movie was love. I suggest you watch it to understand what I mean. I won’t give any spoilers, I’m a nice guy. But yes, love has the capability to move mountains. Have you heard of the Taj Mahal? The story behind it described that a man named Shah Jahan loved a woman named Mumtaz so much that he built the entire Taj Mahal for her. Have you seen how big the Taj Mahal is? Google it right now. Witness what love will make a person do. The lengths a person can go could show how much love they felt towards that certain person. Wouldn’t you do the same if you had the capability? We all wish we could. This is why, love is a great mystery and will forever remain a question that even the greatest of minds will not be able to decipher. It’s beyond our understanding and comprehension. Maybe in a way, it is good that we’ll never understand it. Sometimes things are better left as a mystery.

What is love? Love is a mystery that perplexes even the greatest of minds.
