UCSI Gathered About 40 Malaysia’s Top Employers Under One Roof

In an effort to make job-hunting and talent-seeking a more straightforward endeavour for employers and fresh-graduates, HRINCAMPUS had brought to us UCSI University’s Annual Career Fair on 3rd July 2019.

Held in our very own Multi-Purpose Hall in UCSI University KL Campus, the fair had successfully gathered nearly 40 Malaysia’s top employers including Ernst & Young, Astro and Genting Group, offering not only full-time positions for fresh-graduates, but also internship positions for undergraduates.

Serving as an Employer Branding Platform, Youth Outreach Platform, and Campus Recruitment Platform, UCSI University Career Fair 2019 created an offline, direct recruitment platform to connect both employers and students. This initiative was affectionately received by the UCSI students as well as the public to meet and network with Malaysia’s leading employers.

Ms Chris Lee Kam Fong as the co-ordinator and lecturer from English Language and Communication (ELC) Department, partook in welcoming the industrial partners and watching the awards presentation ceremony to the most supportive industrial partners.

“Prior to the event, for Co-Op coordinators, we extended invitations to our industrial partners to join the Career Fair, but once the event was publicised, all booths were taken in a very shot period of time. Hopefully, student will take the courage to explore various industry sectors and be profound in the workplace even as an intern ,” said Ms Chris.

“The Career Fair was an eye-opener for me. I was exposed to various work environments and I now have a vivid mental picture of my responsibilities as an engineer in the industry, ” shared Ko Ko, a UCSI student emcee. He appreciated this golden chance given to communicate and form connections with potential employers prior to his graduation. He also added that he had gained valuable insights to his prospective employers.

“I visited 8 employers suggested by my engineering faculty and spoke to their representatives. Among them are Continental and TopGlove,” said Suzanne, a Chemical Engineering student. She added that she had picked up several business cards that allows her to contact their departments with ease as well as filling in forms as part of registering for their internship screening.

“This is an interesting experience but I would suggest for the arrangement of companies to be based on their specialised fields so we don’t have to find and contribute to more traffic,” highlighted Suzanne.

Besides the usual things we do in a career fair such as taking personality test, Pavi, an English Language and Communication student, pinpointed that she had fun playing small games and receiving little gifts at some booths. However, the duration was what she found as a drawback. As the fair was only held for 6 hours from 10am to 4pm, Pavi who had packed schedule during the event day, had only limited time to visit the fair. Thus, she hoped that the future career fair will be for two days. “Overall, I had a good experience and managed to gather information from companies like OYO, Astro and Genting Group.”

However, there was a common issue arisen by students that the variety of career fields in this career fair was proportionately inclined to selected fields. Students would have liked to have meet big corporations like Petronas, The Star, Sunway Group in the upcoming session as such companies cater towards their prospective job scope. Besides, by enrolling in these big corporations, students would be able to gain experiences working in such fast-paced environment.

“I went around to talk to the respective industrial partners, I noticed that even there were about 40 companies, most of them were mainly from the banking, finance, engineering and food industries. I tried to inquire about the opportunities for students of ELC, companies that intend to take intern despite their course background are mostly from the media, merchandising, or educational sectors. Others may consider our students to working in the HR or servicing department.” Ms Chris added.

All in all, the career fair received relatively more positive feedback from the visitors, especially UCSI students.
