Food Guide For Those New To UCSI University!

Since I have started to further my studies at UCSI University in May of 2018, I had spent almost two months to get used to the environment here.

I was originally from a rural area and there were no high buildings but only old buildings in my hometown. The food back at my hometown was bland yet delicious for me. Chicken rice, wan tan mee, char kuey teow, nasi lemak are the regular food that is being served at my hometown.

Of course, the best dishes that I had are my mum’s and grandparents’ cooking. Every back and then, I will go back to my hometown just to spend some time with my family and definitely I will not miss their dishes.

Now, it has already been two years that I had come to Cheras, where my university is located.

At first, I was unfamiliar with this place and I do not have any idea what to eat here. I was so silly that I thought that I might starve to death. But thank God that I have some friends that came from the same hometown as me, we could walk around and search for food together as none of us is familiar with the new environment.

Cheras is much more city-like than my hometown, it has all the tall buildings, new shops, cafes which could not be found back in my hometown. The vehicles that move in this city are a few times the number of vehicles in my hometown that made me feel a bit anxious at first. Luckily, with the help of my friends and the new good friends that I had made in my university, I got to get used to the new environment easily.

Eventually, I got to know more new friends and people as I involved in various activities to enrich myself. Through their recommendations and suggestions, I was able to know more about the new city as well as the capital of Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur.

In front of my university, there are a few shop lots where most of the food stalls or cafes are located. There are shops that sell mixed rice, noodles, Thai food, western food, Japanese food and more. The food stall which is the most popular among the students is definitely fast food such as McDonald’s and Texas Chicken.

The students who are all still at their teenager stage like to eat fried food because they think that this food tastes better. Other than that, fast food serves faster than other food stalls and thus it helps save some of the students time as they might be rushing time sometimes.

Throughout these two years of university life, my favourite food is mixed rice because it is undeniably fast and cheap. There are various types of dishes such as vegetables, chickens, fish, tofu, eggs etc that I can choose from to serve it along with white rice.

I always take around three different dishes and it usually costs me around RM 5 to RM 7. Furthermore, mixed rice has a feeling of more like homemade dishes. There are around four mixed rice shops at the shop lots in front of my university and all of the sellers are friendly enough to interact comfortably. This is the reasons why mixed rice has also become one of the famous food stalls among the students here.

Other than the shop lots in front of my university, UCSI University has also provided quite a few food stalls on the campus.

For the North Wing campus, it has around two food stalls inside the campus. Meanwhile, in the South Wing campus, there is at least one food stall in every single block. From block A to Block G, each of them has their own food stall that provides a different kind of foods.

There are Chinese food, Western food, mixed rice, desserts, coffee, cakes, snacks and so on.

The food stall in Block G is my personal favourite due to their delicious spaghetti that comes with a drink as a set and the price is affordable which costs around RM 9.

Nonetheless, the mini-mart which is popular with their ice-cream among the students – Family Mart has opened here inside the campus. Students can buy snacks and drinks whenever they feel like refreshing themselves after the long and hectic classes.

The price of items in Family Mart is the same as the other branches which are still the reasonable price for students here. Moreover, there are also a few mini-marts at Block G where the students can buy similar items as in the Family Mart.

Recently, UCSI campus has opened two coffee shops in Block G which are the MyViet Coffee and Hijao Coffee. The students who like to drink coffee, they can take a break at both the coffee shops as tables and chairs are provided as well.

The price of a cup of coffee is around RM 4 to RM 7 which is a lot cheaper than the outside beverages provider. Last but not least, there is a stall located in Block A where they offer the best waffle I have had.

It costs only RM 4 and the waffle is definitely one of the best I have ever eaten. The stall sells coffee at an affordable price too.
