My University life

I’m Ee Yin, a Nutrition student studying at UCSI University.

I am currently in the second year of my Nutrition with Wellness degree, and it was a tough ride this year due to heavy subjects and demanding assessments. So why did I chose to study Nutrition with Wellness and why UCSI University?

I was a Science student during my high school days and I always see my peers dieting to lose weight so that they can achieve the unrealistic body shape that social media describes as ‘the perfect body’. The canteen from my school provided all sorts of unhealthy items like deep fried nuggets and keropok lekor (Malaysian fish chips). During that time, I was into biology and wanted to make a change in the dieting behaviour of adolescents. I wanted teenagers to undergo puberty in a healthy way, and grow into beautiful adults.

UCSI University was the only private university that provided a Nutrition degree having a good reputation throughout the years. I was rewarded with a scholarship for this four-year programme and lessened my parents’ burden to provide for my academic journey through the PTPTN loan. UCSI University also provided sufficient resources and facilities such as a 5-storey library, various science labs, and study areas. The lecturers were also very helpful and resourceful in guiding us through our lectures and assignments. I had a a good experience as a Nutrition student at UCSI University.

I’m Ee Yin, the president of the UCSI University Chinese Cultural Society.

Other than focusing on academics, I also joined the UCSI University Chinese Cultural Society since Year 1. I love Chinese culture and celebrate all sorts of traditional Chinese festivals like Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Mooncake Festival and Winter Solstice Festival. At the beginning of the journey in the Chinese Cultural Society, I was appointed as the External Affairs Officer and my role was to socialise with representatives from other universities during events. Through this journey, I met different people and get to see how each university organised their events and learn from them.

After being the president of Chinese Cultural Society, I had more commitments and needed to manage my time better in order to cope with my studies. During the Chinese New Year celebration in 2019, we organised an event – The Reunion Dinner 2019 at UCSI University Multi-Purpose Hall.

I’m Ee Yin, a french horn player in an orchestra.

I have played the french horn since I was 14 in high school. Entering university did not stop me from continuing this hobby. I was part of the Taylor’s Symphony Orchestra since 2016 and performed in various concerts. For me, music is a way to relieve stress and clear my mind from my hectic life. Of course, managing my time to attend practices was tough but I had friends who motivated me and encouraged me to not give up in this journey.

I am glad I chose to continue in this path. Every musician I have met is so talented but also hardworking. They are dedicated in making music as well as coming together as one in an orchestra. That is what I find unique in playing in a group.

I’m Ee Yin, a florist in Flora Tings Bouquets.

Being a musician also means attending your other musician friends’ performances, and of course giving flowers! Instead of buying overpriced bouquets I decided to make my own bouquets for my friends. Not only does it save cost but it also gives a touch of customisation to each bouquet as I get to decide what goes into it.

So I have decided to start my own business since there is a demand from the people around me for different occasions. Flora Tings Bouquet is an online store I started in Instagram which provides customised bouquets according to customer’s needs. As a business owner, I get to learn how to deal with different customers and come up with different products in conjunction to different occasions: Birthdays, Valentine’s, Graduation, Anniversaries, etc.

Filling every empty slot

People around me always question whether I sleep in the night… as if my day consists of more than 24 hours.

If you are willing to do something, you do it with passion and no complaints.

I always answer them with this statement, and I truly believe it. My principle is to keep myself occupied with events but also make time to spend with my family as well. They are my supporting pillars and are the people whom I turn to whenever I face any difficulties. Returning home to my family is the best moment of the day as I get to be the real me. I am truly thankful to have a supportive family because without them, I would not be the same person I am now.
